The Lemon Detox diet is a short fasting regime that aims to get your weight loss off to a good start. The classic version is designed around Madal Bal Tree Syrup from which you make up your lemon detox drink. Madal Bal Natural Tree Syrup is made from four different South East Asian palm syrups plus maple syrup. It has a delicious flavour, reminiscent of natural brown-sugar, and is rich in minerals, especially potassium calcium, manganese and zinc. When diluted and combined with lemon, it makes a refreshing detox solution that you can drink either hot or cold.
Madal Bal Lemon Detox Drink
To make the lemon detox drink, add 20 ml Natural Tree Syrup and the freshly squeezed juice of half a lemon to 300 ml hot or cold water. Flavour with cayenne pepper or ginger if you wish. Stir and drink. For a diet drink, it tastes surprisingly good.
The full-strength lemon detox
To kick-start your weight loss, drink the diluted lemon detox solution whenever you feel hungry during the day to replace all meals – this typically works out at between 6 and 9 glasses a day. You can also snack on fresh fruit, vegetable crudités and home-made vegetable soups to help prevent potential side effects of a full-blown detox, such as headache.
Only follow this traditional full strength detox if you are healthy and fit, and only do so for five to seven days. It is too restricted for long-term use. Some people continue to have one detox day per week, however, to help maintain a healthy weight and avoid piling on the pounds.
This classic, lemon detox program is a very low-calorie diet and was tested in a clinical trial involving 84 overweight women. One group followed a normal non-restricted diet (controls), while another group followed a detox diet with a placebo juice (flavoured but containing no tree syrup or lemon juice) and another group followed the lemon detox diet. After 7 days, reductions in body weight, body mass index (BMI), percentage body fat and waist-hip ratio were significantly greater in the lemon detox group than in the other groups. There were also improvements in insulin resistance, leptin and adiponectin appetite hormone levels, and a reduction in inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein) in the lemon detox group. The researchers concluded that the lemon detox program reduces body fat and insulin resistance through calorie restriction and might have potential benefits on heart disease risk factors.
The moderate strength lemon detox
Drink Madal Bal lemon detox solution whenever you feel hungry during the day (5 or 6 glasses).
In addition, you have one light, healthy meal per day (eg grilled salmon, a small serving of brown rice, a large salad with mixed leaves, tomatoes, cucumber, celery, grated carrot, beetroot, peppers, red onion and micro herbs). For additional snacks, eat organic fruit.
You can follow the moderate detox for up to ten days, and it’s a great way to lose four or five kilos in weight.
The gentle lemon detox
Have a healthy breakfast (eg half a grapefruit, a bowl of unsweetened muesli with berries, or a poached egg with spinach).
Drink Madal Bal natural Tree Syrup whenever you feel hungry during the day (2 or 3 glasses). Have fruit and unsweetened yogurt for lunch.
Have a healthy low-carb dinner (eg grilled chicken, sweet potato oven-baked chips, green beans, carrots, sweetcorn).
The gentle detox can be followed for three or four weeks, and is ideal for someone who wants to feel healthier and more energized while losing two or three kilos in weight.
